Why You Should Relive the Childhood Joy in Hobbies

    Published on:

Over the past year, there has been a surge in popularity for Beyblade, Pokémon Cards, and other childhood hobbies. You have grown adults flocking to toy stores to buy Beyblades like they did when they were children. They line up at stores to buy packs of Pokémon like they did with their parents years ago. The big question is why? We talked about how you should try playing your hobbies competitively in a previous article, but there are moments where you need to remember why you play in the first place.

    Childhood Memories

It’s easy to just chalk this all up to healing the inner child or reliving childhood memories and calling it a day, but there’s more to it. As we grow older, we find ourselves craving the joy and the feelings we had when we were children. It can be as simple as having a favorite comfort food from our childhood or reliving moments that fell special. Some people can hear a song and be instantly transported back to that summer afternoon spent with your siblings.

Adults often forget that the beauty of those moments is living in the moment itself. We can always eat the same food and go to the same places and listen to the same song, but we ourselves will never be the same. We have walked many paths and have experienced many things. While our hobbies and memories remain, our past selves do not.

That’s why you see adults indulging in what society labels as “childish hobbies”. It’s not to simply relive the memories and feelings, but to emulate the experience. It is to look back and remember that life was once simpler and filled with joy. The beauty in fun and hobbies is in the ephemeral nature of the feelings we have while experiencing it. The toys we buy and the games we play may be permanent, but the feelings and moments we have with them will forever be transient.

    Remembering the Fun

There are moments where we get too competitive and think of nothing but winning. While there’s nothing wrong with that, I know of too many people, Myself included, that become consumed by the thought of constantly winning that the game no longer becomes fun. There are times when it’s important to sit down and remind yourself that the most important part of a game is for it to be fun.

There’s a reason we “Play” games in the first place. Never forget the joy of playing and remember that at some point in the past, there was a child wishing they were sitting where you are right now. The most important part of any hobby is the joy and the fun we have doing them.

With all that said, go. Go and enter a toy store. Look at the toys you played with as a child. Buy that Transformer you want. Try Beyblade or that Trading Card Game you’ve always wanted to learn and have fun doing so. Never forget that joy is not only reserved for kids. I hope that you can look back years from now and remember the fun you’re having now.

Remember, if you’re having fun right now, then you’re probably in the game’s golden era. Enjoy it and live in the moment. Focus not on the games you could be winning or the matches you lose, but the moments you had the most fun. A game is only truly a game if you play it and enjoy the moment.
