It wouldn’t be The Boys without mature humor, violence, and on-the-nose portrayals of societal issues. Season 4 of The Boys is holding nothing back, giving you the signature The Boys experience; a bloody good time. In this spoiler-free review of the first two episodes of season 4, we’ll be talking about supes new and old who’ve come to mess with The Boys. The 8-episode season will drop the first 3 episodes on June 13, then weekly drops after.
Characters we know and love make their return, with the main cast still intact and reeling from the events of the last season. We see the impact of Butcher’s compound V dosages taking effect and the weight his ticking clock puts on the crew. Annie, Frenchie, Kimiko, Hughie, and M.M. all have their struggles to deal with, clouding the main conflicts of the story and leaving us wanting to see more of how these B-plots tie into the overall mess. Each of these gives more depth to our heroes, showing that they’re dealing with bigger stakes, and their drastic decisions have very real consequences that get more dangerous by the moment.
Homelander’s psyche has taken a beating over the past few seasons, and his slow but steady descent into madness starts with his son, and the addition of some new supes to The Seven. The polarizing duo of Sister Sage, the smartest person alive, and Firecracker, a conspiracy theorist and fake news peddler, increases the tension in the already fraying team of supes. The addition of these two heroes allows us to explore the world and the ongoing conflict from different angles. Much like looking into different news publications would be, these two provide a deeper look into the manipulation going on behind the scenes.
The conflict between Starlight and Homelander’s camps grows stronger and starts to include some under-the-table exchanges, much reminiscent of real-world political rivalries. Homelander’s son Ryan has also entered the mix, and we’re curious how a child with superpowers will handle the chaos. We can feel the rivalry between Homelander and Starlight begin to reach the tipping point, forcing the world, Ryan included, into the personal conflict of Homelander and his god-complex, and Annie’s refusal to take up the mantle of Starlight once more to become a symbol of hope for her followers. We’re hooked and along for the ride to see how this turns out.
