2K and Gearbox Software gave fans their first taste of Borderlands 4 during The Game Awards with an action-packed trailer that introduces a sinister new antagonist and teases a chaotic new world. The game, slated for a 2025 release, promises to raise the stakes for the beloved looter-shooter series with its most ambitious entry to date.
Meet the Timekeeper and the Planet of Kairos
The trailer pulls back the curtain on The Timekeeper, a tyrannical ruler presiding over Kairos, the most perilous planet yet in the Borderlands universe. A looming catastrophe shakes his tightly controlled “Order,” throwing the world into unbridled chaos—prime conditions for Vault Hunters to step in and raise hell.
What’s New in Borderlands 4?
Gearbox is doubling down on what fans love while introducing fresh features to evolve the series. Here’s what’s in store:
- Deeper Vault Hunter Customization: The most expansive skill trees yet let players craft their ideal builds, paired with a massive loot system for endless experimentation.
- Dynamic Exploration: Seamlessly travel across interconnected zones filled with side missions and events that reward curiosity.
- Traversal Mechanics: New tools and vehicles add layers to both exploration and combat, giving players even more ways to loot in style.
- Solo or Co-op Mayhem: Team up with up to three other players for freeform combat, epic boss battles, and over-the-top sci-fi action.
The Devs Are All In
“Borderlands 4 is about freedom and being badass,” said Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox. “This is the wildest world we’ve ever built—overflowing with bizarre creatures, insane loot, and enough firepower to make the biggest scrote monsters regret showing up. The story? It’s killer. You’re gonna love it.”
