CMF Phone 1 by Nothing: A Fun, Balanced Approach to Budget Smartphones

    Published on:

When Nothing unveiled the CMF Phone 1, it wasn’t trying to make a flashy entrance with gimmicks or outrageous claims. Instead, it aimed for something more practical—a smartphone that offers good performance and modern aesthetics at a reasonable price. After spending some time with the CMF Phone 1, I can say it’s a phone that gets a lot right without overpromising.

    Design: Sleek and Familiar

The first thing you’ll notice about the CMF Phone 1 is its clean, minimalist design. Nothing’s signature aesthetic—straightforward lines, subtle curves, and a focus on symmetry—is carried over here. While it doesn’t have the transparent backplate of its sibling, the Nothing Phone (2), the CMF Phone 1 manages to look refined, even with its polycarbonate body. The materials might not scream “premium,” but they feel solid and well put together.

The phone is lightweight and comfortable to hold, with buttons and ports where you’d expect them to be. It strikes a nice balance between looking modern and not veering into “trying too hard” territory. While there’s no official IP rating, the build quality feels like it can handle daily wear and tear without issue.

    Display: Bright and Satisfying

Sporting a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, the CMF Phone 1 punches above its weight class. Colors are vibrant, blacks are deep, and the screen gets bright enough to handle outdoor use without much squinting. While it’s not the sharpest display out there, the resolution of 1080p strikes a nice balance between clarity and battery efficiency. Scrolling and animations feel smooth, and watching videos or gaming is a genuinely enjoyable experience.

    Performance: Reliable for Everyday Tasks

Powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 5G chipset, the CMF Phone 1 isn’t aiming to win any benchmark wars—and that’s okay. For day-to-day tasks like browsing, social media, streaming, and light gaming, it holds up just fine. Multitasking is smooth thanks to 8GB of RAM, and the software feels optimized and free of bloat.

When it comes to gaming, you can comfortably play titles like Genshin Impact or PUBG Mobile on medium settings, but don’t expect a buttery-smooth experience on the highest graphics settings. This phone feels more like a reliable workhorse for the average user rather than a performance beast for power users.

    Camera: Practical but Limited

The CMF Phone 1’s setup includes a 50MP main camera with a dedicated portrait sensor at the rear and a 16MP camera in front. In good lighting, the primary camera captures crisp and well-detailed shots with vibrant colors.

It also features the Truelens Engine 2.0, which uses computational photography algorithms to enhance photos. It helps a lot in less-than-ideal conditions, though don’t expect it to work miracles in the worst lighting environments.

The 16MP front camera does a decent job for selfies and video calls. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s reliable enough to get the job done. If you’re someone who primarily uses their phone camera for casual photos and social media, the CMF Phone 1 will meet most of your needs.

    Battery Life: Dependable

With a 5,000mAh battery, the CMF Phone 1 can easily last a full day of moderate use. Between scrolling through social media, streaming videos, and taking a few calls, I never felt the need to reach for a charger before bedtime. It supports 33W fast charging, which gets you from 0 to around 50% in 30 minutes. While it lacks wireless charging, that’s a minor trade-off given the phone’s price point.

    Software: Clean and Intuitive

The phone runs on Nothing OS 2.0, which is essentially Android with some thoughtful tweaks. The interface is clean, intuitive, and free from unnecessary clutter. If you appreciate stock Android but want a bit of flair, you’ll feel right at home here. Regular updates and security patches are promised, which adds to the phone’s overall reliability.

    Accessories: The Real Fun Part

The CMF Phone 1 features a unique modular system that allows you to attach various cases and accessories using screws. The options available include a kickstand, a lanyard, and a magnetic card case. Although the selection is limited right now, this modular approach has significant potential, and we can expect more interesting accessories to be introduced in the future.

    Verdict: A Balanced Offering

The CMF Phone 1 by Nothing doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel—and that’s what makes it appealing. It’s a phone for people who value practical features and a clean design over flashy extras. While it’s not without its compromises (low-light camera performance and lack of wireless charging), it’s a well-rounded device that delivers on its promise of providing good value for its price.

If you’re in the market for a phone that’s reliable, stylish and doesn’t cost a fortune, the CMF Phone 1 is worth considering. It’s not here to blow you away, but it will quietly impress you in ways that matter most.
