A bold new challenger entered the Trading Card Game scene earlier this year. In case you missed it, the hit mobile game, CookieRun, created a TCG based on the CookieRun universe. The game is called CookieRun: Braverse and it might just be your next TCG.
What’s it About?
CookieRun: Braverse is a TCG where players battle each other with a 60 card deck. Decks can be composed of Cookies, Items, Traps, and Stage cards. This adorable and exciting TCG is brought to you by Devsisters’ Global IP Business Group (GIPB). In fact, this is their first foray into the TCG world.
The core concept of the TCG is the multiverse aspect. It explores countless possibilities in the Cookie world and hinges around a rift that enables access to the Cookie multiverse. From this multiverse we get different Cookies from different planets, each one representing a specific color and playstyle.
The game features five main colors to choose from. Each color has their own playstyle and is represented by a featured Cookie. No matter what color you pick, there’s a starter set readily available to help you get into the game.
Core Design and Vision
As latecomers to the TCG scene, the team behind CookieRun: Braverse had a lot of catching up to do. According to an interview with them, they devoted a significant amount of time to studying and analyzing the concepts and mechanics of TCGs and what made them unique. This was then applied in making the most important part of their game: The Rules.
It’s no secret that some TCGs have a steep learning curve, especially the higher up you go on the competitive ladder. With this in mind, the CookieRun team developed the game around three core tenets: Everyone, Enjoy, and Expect. They wanted to create a game that everyone could enjoy as well as expect an exciting method of play.
Although this was easier said than done, the majority of the planning and concept designing went into the creation of the rules and mechanics of the game. This built the foundation for a fun TCG that anyone could pick up and have fun. According to the team, the rules were redesigned at least five times.
Eventually, their work paid off. In a playtesting event, players from varying age ranges provided positive feedback and comments. It appeared that many players found their game fun.
So why CookieRun?
The initial goal of the CookieRun: Braverse team was to reach a wider audience far beyond the shores of Korea. They banked all their confidence on the well received and wildly popular CookieRun franchise to do just that. To achieve this goal, they combined all the charm and popularity of CookieRun with the fun and tactical aspects of a TCG.
Reaching beyond the local scene is no easy feat, however. CookieRun may be wildly popular in Korea, but it’s only recently begun its international craze over the past few years. In order to successfully take their franchise to the TCG scene, they enlisted the help of top names in the TCG industry.
The opportunity would present itself when they had the chance to work with Ryo Shinomoto, one of the top players of the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG, and designer for the Dragon Ball and One Piece TCGs. In addition, Kenji Watanabe, senior designer for the Pokemon franchise and original artist for the Digimon franchise, also joined the effort.
Others joined as well: In-Hyuk Lee, who illustrated for Magic: The Gathering, Jun-Seong Park, illustrator for League and Legends and Legends of Runeterra at Riot Games, and Yo-Seok Heuk, who has reimagined the beauty of Korea in an attractive and unique artistic format. These are producers and designers, not only known by the TCG industry, but also the general public.
With all the collaborations, the team managed to take the beloved characters and everything fans loved about the franchise and turned it into a TCG.
