Every Final Fantasy Preview Card Explained – Magic: the Gathering Universes Beyond Crossover

    Published on:

Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy fans are set to experience a unique crossover on June 13, 2025, with the Universes Beyond collaboration, marking the largest collection of Final Fantasy artwork within a single game. This ambitious set spans all sixteen main-series entries, offering both new and familiar artwork crafted by esteemed MTG and Final Fantasy artists. Each card brings iconic characters and unforgettable moments to life, blending two storied fantasy worlds into one collectible experience. At the moment there were only six artworks previewed so far, so if you’re interested in learning about what they’re based on, look no further!

Sephiroth At The City Of The Ancients

The previewed cards highlight some unforgettable scenes. One of the most striking is Final Fantasy VII’s Sephiroth descending from above in his infamous attack, a moment etched as one of the most heartbreaking scenes in gaming history. This haunting scene alone reinforces his standing as one of the franchise’s most iconic villains.

    THAT Lake Scene

Another card features FFX’s tender moment between Yuna and Tidus at Lake Malaclania, where Tidus offers comfort to the downtrodden Yuna. Often referred to as “the lake scene,” this is where the pair recognizes their mutual feelings and is beloved by fans for its heartfelt depth and visual beauty.

    The Post Moogle

Classic Final Fantasy creatures, such as the Moogle, are also making appearances. I think that this specific character is the Post Moogle from FFXIV, who takes players on a questline to deliver mail around Eorzea and eventually rewards them with their very own Postman Cap.

    The Poisoning Of Doma

From Final Fantasy VI, the unhinged villain Kefka is shown here with his signature chaotic vibe. This specific scene depicts his most horrific act up to that point in FFVI’s story – the poisoning of the Doma water supply during the siege of the castle. This led to the deaths of all of its civilian and military inhabitants except for two. Also, on another interesting note, Kefka is the first Final Fantasy villain who actually managed to destroy their world.

    Lightning’s Entrance

Final Fantasy XIII’s protagonist, Lightning, also joins the set, and this artwork likely references her iconic debut in the prison train sequence.

Arguably The Best Villain Ever In Final Fantasy

Finally, FF XIV’s Emet-Selch brings a fan-favorite to the crossover, marking one of FFXIV’s most complex and well-loved villains. His tragic and sympathetic backstory transformed the Ascians, a group initially perceived as flat antagonists, into a compelling civilization with a rich history and doomed fate, earning Emet-Selch a lasting place in fans’ hearts.

As more cards are unveiled, players can expect even more memorable scenes and beloved characters from the Final Fantasy series to become cards in Magic: The Gathering. More than any Universes Beyond crossover, I think Wizards definitely scored a critical hit in bringing these two fantasy worlds together.
