We ran a poll a couple of weeks ago about which is the best beginner TCG (Trading Card Game). We were expecting Magic: the Gathering to win the whole thing – after all, it’s the first TCG ever created, is still going strong up to this day, and it’s a well-designed game whose basics can be easily learned in one sitting.
However, we’re surprised at the results that you’ll see below, and that just goes to show not just how approachable these games are but also the power of the communities behind them. It’s also a great look at which TCGs are popular locally and, at the end of the day, a good reference if you’re looking to try one of these games. Unfortunately, we can’t put every card game (we would if we could) in the poll, but if you have other good recommendations, let us know!
And with that, the results:
Best Beginner TCG – Yu-gi-oh!
Here’s the big one that we’re so surprised about, and that’s mainly because of the high-level Yu-gi-oh! gameplay we see on the internet are hyper-tuned decks that try to impose their game plan on the opponent (or shut them down completely). This causes the impression that games can be one-sided, and they sometimes can be.
However, the basic rules of Yu-Gi-Oh! are relatively straightforward. Players summon monsters, activate spells, and set traps to outplay their opponents. Games are typically fast-paced, which keeps beginners interested and prevents them from feeling bogged down by lengthy game sessions. Finally, many cards have effects that are easy to understand and use. This makes it simpler for new players to learn and strategize without getting overwhelmed by intricate card interactions (at least until they reach the more advanced levels).
Also, we’re still in shock that PH has such a big YGO community. More power to you guys!
Best Beginner TCG – Pokemon
We have memories of playing Pokemon TCG at some point in our lives, and we think this might have been a better introduction to TCGs than YGO. The Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) features simple rules that allow players to engage in exciting battles using Pokemon cards and offers straightforward mechanics for attacking, defending, and evolving Pokemon. This accessibility makes it easy for newcomers to quickly grasp the basics, providing an engaging and enjoyable experience, particularly for fans of the Pokémon franchise. PH also has an active Pokemon TCG scene, so there’s never a shortage of tournaments or events to participate in.
Best Beginner TCG – Magic: the Gathering
Magic: The Gathering (MTG) has a wide range of products tailored for beginners, including pre-constructed decks like Starter Decks and Planeswalker Decks, which were created specifically to help new players ease into the game. Although Magic can seem complex overall, its basic mechanics are quite straightforward. Players summon creatures, cast spells, and deploy various resources to deplete their opponent’s life total to zero, offering a clear and concrete objective. MTG accommodates various play styles and formats, ranging from casual kitchen-table games to competitive tournaments. Finally, the game is widely played in the country, and it’s almost guaranteed that every friendly local game store you enter will have MTG products and an active community.
Best Beginner TCG – One Piece
One Piece’s mechanics are designed to be easy to grasp, allowing players to summon characters, unleash powerful abilities, and engage in strategic battles without overwhelming complexity. The rich world of the One Piece anime and manga adds an extra layer of immersion and enjoyment for fans of the series. We also have an active local OP TCG community, and most players actively participate in tournaments to try to earn their coveted prize cards.
Best Beginner TCG – Flesh and Blood
Flesh and Blood’s rules are designed to be easy to understand without sacrificing depth. Players will quickly learn the game’s fundamental aspects, such as attacking, defending, and managing resources. One of the best things about FaB is that players are never out of options because each card can be used in multiple ways. This dynamic ensures that every game remains engaging while also helping newcomers learn how to anticipate and react to their opponent’s choices. While it’s still relatively new to the country, PH is regarded to have one of the most active FaB TCG communities in the world and has experienced much growth during the past couple of years.
Best Beginner TCG – Grand Archive
Grand Archive TCG offers straightforward mechanics that ensure new players can quickly grasp the basics without feeling overwhelmed. From summoning characters to casting spells and engaging in tactical battles, the game’s well-structured phases and clear instructions make it easy for beginners to understand the flow of the game. The visually appealing anime-style artwork and compelling fantasy theme are also a huge draw for the game, as they enhance the overall enjoyment of learning and playing it. Just like FaB, PH has an active and growing GA community and has garnered the interest of anime fans and players who are looking for card games that are alternative to the big three above.
So there you have it. At the end of the day, any of these games are a great jumping point into getting into TCGs and will ultimately depend on what you like and the experience that you are looking for. Of course, here at VRSUS, we’re a little biased toward FaB, but any of these are great.
And speaking of FaB events, a major, international one is coming next week – Calling: Manila!
