Renowned game designer Hideo Kojima recently shared an image from P.T. on his Instagram, reigniting fan discussions. P.T., released in 2014, was a playable teaser for the now-canceled Silent Hills project, which Kojima was developing alongside filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and actor Norman Reedus.
The teaser quickly gained a cult following due to its eerie atmosphere and innovative gameplay. However, the project was shelved after Kojima departed from Konami, leaving many fans disappointed.
Kojima’s recent post has led to various interpretations. Some enthusiasts view it as a nostalgic nod, while others speculate it could hint at a new horror venture. Adding fuel to the fire, discussions on Reddit have highlighted that P.T. celebrated its 10th anniversary in August 2024, suggesting the post might commemorate this milestone.
Currently, Kojima is known to be working on a project titled “OD”, in collaboration with director Jordan Peele and actress Hunter Schafer. This venture aims to explore the boundaries of fear and blur the lines between gaming and cinema.
While the exact meaning behind Kojima’s P.T. post remains uncertain, it has undoubtedly rekindled interest and hope among fans for future horror projects from the visionary creator.
Hideo Kojima, the mastermind behind Metal Gear Solid, had a long and successful career at Konami. However, in 2015, things took a sharp turn, leading to his departure from the company under controversial circumstances.
Why did P.T. get canceled? / Why did Silent Hills get canceled?

Kojima had teamed up with Guillermo del Toro and Norman Reedus for Silent Hills, a highly anticipated horror game teased through P.T.
Konami canceled the project in 2015, adding to fan outrage. At the time, Konami was moving away from AAA game development and investing more in mobile games, slot machines, and pachinko machines, a popular gambling-style game in Japan. Since Silent Hills was a high-budget horror game, it likely didn’t fit their new business model.
The Silent Hill series had already struggled with lower sales and mixed reviews from previous games. Even though P.T. was a massive hit, Konami may have been unsure if a full game could justify the investment. There were also murmurs about a legal issue, but we don’t know.
Why did Hideo Kojima and Konami break up?
Kojima had big-budget, ambitious ideas, especially with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Konami, shifting toward mobile gaming and cost-cutting, reportedly wanted faster and cheaper game production. This led to clashes over development time and spending.
During MGS V’s development, Konami removed Kojima’s name from promotional materials, restricted his communication, and eventually shut down Kojima Productions as a subsidiary. Reports even suggested that Kojima and his team had limited access to email and resources near the game’s launch.
After MGS V launched, Konami officially announced Kojima’s departure in December 2015. Reports claim Konami banned him from attending The Game Awards that year despite MGS V winning an award.
What happened to Hideo Kojima after leaving Konami?
Kojima quickly bounced back, forming a new independent studio, Kojima Productions, and partnering with Sony to develop Death Stranding. Meanwhile, Konami shifted focus toward mobile games and pachinko machines, leading many fans to believe they had abandoned major AAA projects.
The fallout remains one of the biggest breakups in gaming history, and fans still wonder what could have been if Kojima had stayed.
