Is the Nintendo Switch 2 the Best Handheld to Get?

    Published on:

It’s been a few days since Nintendo released the teaser for the Nintendo Switch 2. While there are Nintendo fans are hyping it up, we’re wondering if the Switch 2 will sell as well as the OG Switch?

    Switch Things Up

Today, a lot people prefer the comfort and portability of handhelds. You don’t need to sit in front of a TV or monitor to play and gaming on a handheld is by far the comfiest option. However, back then, you didn’t have a lot of options for handhelds.

The original Nintendo Switch launched in March of 2017, almost 8 whole years ago. At that time, the handheld market was practically baren and a niche that hadn’t been contested. Given the current state of the handheld market, it’s a little hard to say whether or not the Switch 2 will sell like the Switch.

For one, the Switch literally had no competition when it first came out. Outside of the ocassional handheld emulator, the Switch was uncontested in the handheld niche. The only other thing close to the Switch was mobile gaming, and even then it was markedly different. Currently, you have the Steamdeck, ROG Ally X, the Lenovo Legion go, and a bunch of other options for handhelds.

Considering that these handhelds can run games better than the Switch, it’s harder to justify buying one. However, while there are a lot of reasons to just pony up the dough for a better handheld, there’s an equally exhaustive list of reasons why you should get the Switch 2. Let me explain.

Why You Should Consider Getting the Switch 2

Outside of it being the shiny new system from Nintendo, there’s more to consider. The Nintendo Switch 2 marks the start of a new generation of portable consoles. This means, there are a lot of games that are going to be developed with the Switch 2 in mind. It’s safe to assume that game developers are aiming to cash in on the Switch 2’s launch. With that, they are more focused on producing games that natively run well on the Switch 2.

The Switch was lacking in terms of processing power and capabilities upon release, even for its time. With the Switch 2 seemingly getting an upgrade, there’s a big chance that games that couldn’t run on the Switch before have a chance of being ported over. If that’s true, that would make the Switch 2 the cheapest option for high-quality handheld gaming. One of the only reason people would choose a Steamdeck over a Switch back then was to play games the Switch couldn’t handle. The other reason being the bigger steam library they owned. While I’m not saying the Switch 2 will be able to run Baldur’s Gate 3, it can possibly play Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered.

Another thing to consider is the fact that there are inevitably going to be Nintendo exclusives on top of the possible ports for the Nintendo Switch 2. Games like the recently teased Mario Kart 9 and Metroid Prime 4. Like it or not, but the Switch was still one of the top handhelds even alongside the Steamdeck and the Ally. So you can bet that fans will jump at the chance to buy an upgrade.

    A Casual Gamer’s Best Friend

At the end of the day, the Nintendo Switch 2 is a great option for casual gaming. You don’t need to get the Ally X or the Steamdeck if all you’re after is something fun to play. The Nintendo Switch 2 is affordable and gets you all the gaming you need. If the leaks are right, then you can expect PS4 quality capabilities on a handheld device. It’s also at a much affordable price compared to the Ally X.

Before you go ranting about benchmarks and specs, realize that the Switch 2 is not marketed as a high-powered handheld PC. It’s meant to be a console anyone can pick up and play. Most people don’t care if they can overclock their GPU or get 250 FPS. Most of the times, playable is enough to the average person. The Switch was highly popular for that reason. It appealed to the majority of the population that wants to play games but doesn’t care about the benchmark scores. If it can play the games they want, then they don’t need to pony up 39.2% more money just for higher specs.

I know a lot of people who bought the Ally X and the Legion Go and all they play is Hades or Monster Hunter Rise. You don’t need that much power especially if you already have a PC that can play your triple A titles. Most of the time, all you want from a handheld is convenience. The Nintendo Switch 2 brings that to the table in spades.

So honestly, we can say get the Switch 2. You saw how popular and beloved the Switch was in its prime so you can rest assured it’s a good choice. It’s also the current cheapest option on the market.
