Magic Knight Rayearth is one of those unique, nostalgic 90s anime that’s memorable for a number of things – the gorgeous trio of main leads, the many interesting supporting cast, Mokona, the beautiful fantasy world of Cepiro, that plot twist, and those cool mecha that finally guys to watch a CLAMP series (if they don’t want to admit that they’re watching Card Captor Sakura already).
Anyway, fans of Magic Knight Rayearth will have a lot to celebrate soon because the series is getting a new anime adaptation to celebrate the series’ 30th (wow, it’s been that long, huh) anniversary!
For those of you who are new and are interested in Magic Knight Rayearth or are in denial of their age, the series follows the adventures of Hikaru (the girl in red uniform), Umi (best girl btw), and Fuu as they get Isekai’d to the land of Cepiro while on a field trip to the Tokyo Tower with their respective schools. Why the story needs protagonists from 3 different schools on a field trip at the same time, we’ll never know.
Anyway, at Cepiro they learned that the world itself is maintained by a Pillar and – big surprise – Princess Emeraude, the current Pillar, is missing. They later learned that she was kidnapped by the devilishly handsome antagonist Zagato, and the trio have to bring her back to keep the world in order and return back to Tokyo. Guiding them in their journey is a useful creature named Mokona, who’s absolutely adorable and I totally didn’t have a plush toy of back then.
Of course, things aren’t that easy for our main cast because not everything in Magic Knight Rayearth is as they appear on the surface. There are a couple of darker plot threads and twists that made the series popular and memorable for anime fans back then, and it will be interesting to see how it’ll hold up in the current times.
However, we can’t keep our hopes too high up – maybe what we’ll just get is an OVA or two but hey, we’ll take it!
