Nintendo Switch OLED: Is it Still Worth it in 2024?

    Published on:

The Nintendo Switch OLED is arguably the best-selling console of this generation. As of November this year, the Nintendo Switch has sold about 146.04 million units worldwide! This easily puts it as one of Nintendo’s best selling consoles just under the Nintendo DS. The main question now, though, is if it’s still worth to get one in 2024?

    Why get a Switch OLED?

The Nintendo Switch came out in 2017 and the OLED came out in 2021. With talk about the Switch 2 coming out next year, a lot of people are apprehensive about still getting an OLED. There are some of you who still want to get and OLED and that’s perfectly fine! The Switch is still one of the best consoles of all times and it’s worth the price tag. It’s especially worth it to get one if you find one second hand or at a discount. Before we go into more comparisons with the Switch 2, let’s go over the reasons why a Switch OLED is still worth in 2024.

    Affordability

To begin with, the Nintendo Switch is the cheapest and most affordable console out right now. The main model is about 350 USD in the USA and 14,750 PHP if you’re in the Philippines. This is almost half the price of a PlayStation 5 and less than half for the PS5 pro.

Gaming is not a cheap hobby by any means. At the end of the day, it’s a luxury but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be affordable. From the consoles to the games, there’s a hefty price tag attached to it and so, you would want to save money when you can. The Nintendo Switch OLED offers an expansive and fun library for the price and that’s honestly one of the bigger reasons why you should get one.

Another plus is the fact that at this price point, you’re getting a gorgeous OLED screen. Other devices that have OLED panels, like the Steam Deck OLED, are usually double the price of a Switch OLED. The face that you get one on the Switch is a significant point of consideration. Keep in mind though that The moment Nintendo announces that the Switch 2 will be at a similar price point and have an OLED screen, it’s all over for the Switch OLED.

    Game Library

This reason is a little tricky to justify. If you had asked anyone earlier in 2024, they would have told you that buying a Nintendo Switch OLED was worth due to the sheer amount of titles in its library. Quite recently, Furukawa posted on X that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible. So that means that you will be able to play Switch games on the Switch 2 alongside its potentially exclusive library. The fact that you can enjoy your Switch library on the Switch two is a major point against getting a Switch OLED now.

On the other hand, we don’t actually know how porting over your switch games will work. It’s not confirmed if the console will have a dedicated slot for physical Switch cards or if it’ll only be available through the E-shop. While we are still unsure about this, we can count this as a point to getting a Nintendo Switch OLED.

    Save for the Switch 2

I could only really give two main points for getting the Switch OLED in 2024 simply because of how promising and close the Switch 2 release is. The Switch has reached the end of the average console lifespan and at this point, it’s best to start future-proofing. The Switch 2 is confirmed to be coming out next year. That means that in about 6-11 months, the Switch OLED will be considered obsolete. Honestly, this choice wouldn’t even be a question a few months back. However, Furukawa basically confirmed that there is no more need for the OLED in 2025. The Switch 2 will have backwards compatibility and that’s a significant advantage over the Switch OLED.

With all that said, it’s probably still a better idea to save for the Switch 2 instead. If you want to play games from the Nintendo Switch library now, then by all means get the Switch OLED. However, if you had to choose getting one over the other, saving up for the Switch 2 is probably the better idea.

We already know that it’s going to have backwards compatibility. That means it can do everything the Switch OLED can but better. Even by the standards of that time, the Nintendo Switch was already running on hardware considered outdated on release. After 7 years, it may be time for an upgrade. We can only hope that the Switch 2 will have the same price tag as the Switch OLED. If it does, it may just be the hottest console sale since the PS5.

    Final Thoughts

At the end of the day the Nintendo Switch 2 release is tantalizingly near. We personally recommend saving for the Switch 2 over getting a Nintendo Switch OLED. The only time we would say get a Switch OLED is if you find one at a discount or you just want a Switch. However, the next generation of Nintendo consoles is near. Just like how we said goodbye to the 3DS, it’s almost time to upgrade to the next console.

In fact, getting a Switch 2 may be easier compared to when the Switch first came out in 2017. Be sure to follow our page and the SM Cyberzone page on Facebook to be up to date when pre-orders for the Switch 2 go live.
