If you’re a fan of Trading Card Games (TCGs), you know that the market is packed with all sorts of options. But Altered TCG by Equinox is carving out its own space by doing things a little differently. It’s not just another card game; it’s more like a card-based board game, with a win condition that’s more about strategy than simply overpowering your opponent with stronger cards.
The objective in Altered TCG is straightforward but unique: your goal is to reunite your Hero and their Companion, who start on opposite ends of a series of card-maps (called Tumults). Imagine it like trying to reunite with a long-lost friend or pet after a journey. You win by getting both characters to meet after traversing several Tumults.
To move either your Hero or Companion forward, you need to win expeditions. This is where your deck comes into play, using a combination of Units, Spells, and Permanents. Units contribute points to one of three land types: mountain, forest, or water. You win an expedition if your points in the current land type outnumber your opponent’s, allowing your Hero or Companion to advance. It’s a cycle of strategy and outmaneuvering until the two meet in the middle.
The Spells and Permanents? Those cards are your secret weapons, allowing you to bolster your own expeditions or throw a wrench into your opponent’s plans. These layers of tactics make Altered TCG much more than a simple race to the finish.
What makes Altered even more interesting is its six factions, each with its own unique playstyle and set of heroes. With three heroes per faction, you have plenty of room to experiment and find the strategy that suits you best. Whether you like playing aggressively, defensively, or somewhere in between, there’s a Hero and Faction that fits your vibe.
Deck-building in Altered also has its own twist. Each deck contains 39 cards plus your Hero, but the game keeps things balanced by limiting how many powerful cards you can include. You’re only allowed up to three Unique cards and up to 15 Rare cards, meaning the bulk of your deck will be made up of Common cards. This not only keeps the game fair but also makes it a lot more accessible and affordable to new players. You don’t need to hunt down a bunch of expensive cards just to be competitive.
One of the coolest things about Altered is its integration with technology. Every card comes with a QR code that links to the game’s app. You scan the code to claim ownership of your cards, and if you trade them, you transfer ownership digitally too. It’s an extra layer of security that ensures players only use cards they actually own during official tournaments. While scanning cards might feel like an extra step, it adds peace of mind, especially when dealing with those rare and valuable cards.
The game is still fresh, having only been out for about a month, but it’s already picking up steam. If you’re looking for a new card game with a unique twist, Altered TCG might just be the next big thing to dive into.
