This article is made by one of our contributors in the gaming space who would want to remain anonymous. Like any true MGS fan, he carries the grudge of Kojima’s firing, Konami’s chosen business direction, and hopes that maybe everything can go back to the way it was – the good old days of Tactical Espionage Action.
Metal Gear remakes tell a story about how Konami is doing right now as a company.
The Metal Gear franchise, produced by Konami in 1987, is getting a new Metal Gear game in the form of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, which is set to be released later this year for the PS5, XBOX, and PC. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a remake of the same-titled game that came out in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, promising the same classic MGS stealth/action and story-telling with modern graphics and improved gameplay.
Metal Gear Remakes Won’t Have Been Necessary If “That Incident” Didn’t Happen
The Metal Gear Solid series (MGS) has developed a cult-like following over the years and has been subject to more than a dozen memes, all thanks to the innovative, if not quirky, game features the franchise has pioneered in the gaming industry and remains to be one of the most recognized games to date. In 2015, however, the game’s original creator, Hideo Kojima, left Konami to direct his independent studio, Kojima Productions, after the release of the 20th game, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, leaving most fans in disarray and anxious about future MGS titles sans Kojima.
Kojima Is Metal Gear
Known for his bizarre gameplay mechanics and cinematic storytelling, Kojima has earned much praise from fellow game directors and gamers as a creative powerhouse in the game development industry. With Kojima no longer working on the MGS franchise, many fans have outright voiced their opinions, saying that the MGS games will never be the same without Hideo at the helm, which is perhaps the reason why there have not been any new major MGS titles in development since The Phantom Pain. The MGS spinoff title, Metal Gear Survive, was released after Kojima’s departure and was met with hard criticism. It failed to meet fans’ expectations, as evidenced by the lack of commercial sales whatsoever.
Metal Gear Remakes Reflect Konami’s Mistaken Priorities
Konami, despite having a long list of popular game series such as Castlevania, Contra, Suikoden, and the MGS franchise, to name a few, instead focused on other aspects of the gaming industry, prioritizing their Pachinko games over previously mentioned franchises. This latest installment of the beloved franchise, which is also considered by many to be one of the best, if not the best, titles in the series, looks to be Konami’s desperate attempt to revive the franchise in what may be the start of a long line of remakes. With Snake Eater Delta in the books and fan service parts of the original MGS: Twin Snakes present in The Phantom Pain, are players really looking forward to a full remake of the PS1 classic Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes after Delta, or will this finally spell the end for Konami and the franchise?
With the way things are going now, it might be possible for Konami to consider turning to movies – but what makes a good movie adaptation? Check out our article about it below!
