It’s a little early for creatures of the night, but we can’t resist giving you an early treat! This month’s VRSUS Cosplay Feature is a callback to one of the most popular characters that Capcom has ever created. She was so popular that she outlived the fighting game franchise from which she initially came decades ago, and she has been a guest character in other games until now. Let us introduce you to the alluringly powerful Morrigan Aensland, one of the most iconic characters from the Darkstalkers series!
Morrigan is a sultry succubus with a flair for the dramatic and an insatiable love for thrills. As a powerful demon from the Makai realm, she’s heir to the prestigious Aensland family, ruling over legions of otherworldly beings. But Morrigan? She’s more interested in excitement than responsibility. Instead of embracing the duties of her inheritance, she prefers soaring through dimensions, seeking out battles, pleasures, and fun wherever they may be.
Morrigan is playful and carefree yet dangerously powerful underneath the allure and teasing demeanor. She may toy with her opponents, but when the claws come out, she proves why she’s one of the deadliest beings in the Darkstalkers universe.
Our Morrigan cosplayer is just as fascinating, perfectly embodying the character’s enticing charm – MISTRESS JOYEN! She has a very interesting profile, as you’ll learn from our interview below. She’s also popular in several niche subcultures in the country and abroad and is undeniably an otaku at heart.

VRSUS: Hello, Joyen, could you introduce yourself to our audience?
JOYEN: My name is Joyen – Mistress if you’re nasty – and I’m a dominatrix stripper.
V: ???
J: AH WELL IT IS WHAT IT IS!
V: Alright, cool! Is this your first cosplay?
J: I think this is my third time in a cosplay shoot. Dar and I were able to shoot many characters within those few times. If I were to base it on characters, this would be my sixth.
V: Why do you cosplay?
J: I feel like it’s been innate to me. I’ve been a fan of anime and cosplay for a very, very long time. However, I didn’t have any bandwidth for it while I was pursuing my main jobs. So, my main jobs also require a lot of dressing up and a lot of production value, and it’s only now that I have the time and space for cosplay.
V: What’s your favorite part about cosplay?
J: *Her eyes lit up* Oh! My favorite part about cosplay is that I become the characters I play or watch, and I also get to add my own spin on that.
V: What’s the craziest thing you’ve done for or in cosplay?
J: *laughs* does shooting soft porn count?
V: *speechless*
J: *still laughing* does that count as crazy? Oh my god! Ok, here’s one during the first-ever cosplay shoot that I did with Dar. So we shot it at a love hotel, and I was cosplaying as Yor Forger, and then, for some reason, I ended up without any panties *laughing* during that shoot! There were mirrors on the ceiling, and she does high kicks, so go figure.
V: Who would you like to cosplay that you haven’t done yet?
J: Okay, actually next on my list right now is Bayonetta. There are also a lot of characters, which I hope you guys know – I’m looking at Ingrid from Makai Kishi Ingrid. Crickets? Alright sure, IYKYK *laughs* (Editor’s Note: it’s H*ntai). I’m also looking at the classics. I still wanna do a nice Rei Ayanami cosplay – Neon Genesis Evangelion is my favorite anime, and I still wanna do that. I have a list! Also Mikasa from Attack On Titan, but in the gym – so adding my own twist to it. Those are the cosplays that I’m looking forward to.
V: Are there any characters who are off the list, or you would never cosplay?
J: That is hard. Hmm. On a superficial note, I generally don’t like blonde hair on me – that’s it. But I like Sailor Moon, so it’s kind of a soft limit with me. Other than that I like being the character and adding the Mistress Joyen there, so whatever character it may be it’s nice to mix it around.
