What’s Ranma 1/2, And What’s With The Fraction?

    Published on:

Ranma 1/2 is a popular manga and anime series created by Rumiko Takahashi. It’s about a martial artist named Ranma Saotome who, because of a training accident, falls into a cursed spring that turns him into a girl when splashed with cold water and back into a boy with hot water. The story follows Ranma as he tries to find a cure for this and deals with friends, enemies, and love interests. The series is known for its humor and the characters’ diverse personalities and relationships.

Ranma 1/2’s Premise Is Unlike Any Other

During a rigorous training journey in the Bayankala Mountain Range in China, Ranma Saotome and his father Genma discovered a series of cursed springs at Jusenkyo. These springs have the ability to transform individuals upon contact with cold water, reverting with hot water. Unfortunately, both of them fall into the springs and get cursed – Genma turns into a panda, and Ranma transforms into a girl.

Complicating this problem is Soun Tendo, Genma’s friend, who made an agreement years ago that their children would marry and take over the Tendo Dojo. Soun has three teenage daughters: Kasumi, Nabiki, and Akane. Akane is arranged to marry a boy named Ranma, but when they meet, the Ranma that arrives turns out to be a girl. Despite (a lot) initial resistance, the engagement still pushes through, and their complicated relationship becomes the focus of the story.

    The Chaos Continues…

At Furinkan High School, Ranma goes to classes with Akane and meets a kendo team captain named Tatewaki Kuno, who is very full of himself. Kuno pursues Akane aggressively and also develops feelings for Ranma’s female form without knowing about Ranma’s curse. The chaos continues in the town of Nerima with the arrival of Ranma’s martial arts rivals, such as Ryoga Hibiki, who struggles with a sense of direction and eventually turns into a little black pig. Another rival is Mousse, who turns into a duck when he gets wet. Lastly, there’s Happosai, a mischievous grandmaster who has the reprehensible hobby of stealing schoolgirls’ underwear.

Meanwhile, complicating things (especially for Akane) is Ranma also being caught in a romantic whirlwind as multiple people vie for his affection, including Kodachi Kuno, a skilled gymnast; Ukyo Kuonji, his childhood friend and talented cook; and Shampoo, an Amazon fighter. Meanwhile, his school life gets even more chaotic with the return of the eccentric Principal Kuno and the arrival of a new teacher, Hinako Ninomiya, who has the ability to steal power from others and switch between being a child and an adult. A recurring plot point throughout the series is about Ranma being torn between his suitors and facing trouble in his love life and at school.

The manga has garnered immense popularity, with over 55 million copies circulating, as well as an anime adaptation, making it one of the most successful manga series ever. It is also among the early Japanese comics and shows that gained widespread popularity in the United States.

A remake of Ranma 1/2 has recently been announced, and we can’t wait to see this classic once more!
